Why is the Tesla Model Y still number one?
The Model Y has been Europe’s best-selling electric car for several years, and a refreshed version arrived in 2025. But its lead is shrinking: Tesla’s European registrations fell 27% to 236,357 in 2025, according to JATO, while Volkswagen sold about 274,000 electric cars and took the lead by brand.
What explains the rise of the Skoda Elroq and Renault 5?
Price and size. Both are compact, practical and cheaper than the previous generation of electric SUVs. The Elroq went from launch to second place in Europe in its first full year, and it was the best-selling car of any kind in Denmark. The Renault 5 brought a small, affordable electric car to a market that had few of them.
What do the best-sellers mean for the used market?
New car sales today become the used supply of tomorrow. The models on this list, especially the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 and the Skoda Enyaq, are already the most imported used EVs in Denmark, mostly from Germany. Expect the Elroq and the Renault 5 to follow as the first lease returns come back on the market.
